“Princess Resurrection” is an anime that I found surprisingly engrossing considering it has been completely unheralded. I ran into it by coincidence while searching for obscure vampire titles and it was just about love at first sight. The show has been released in two 13-episodes sets, which I feel is a solid model for releasing anime seasons as opposed to the excruciatingly expensive and frustratingly lengthy one-volume-at-a-time approach. While full season sets are still preferable, if half-season ones get the latest anime in our hands that much sooner and cheaper, then I’m all for it. I’m reviewing both sets at once because I’m lazy. For a show that seems to utilize nearly every anime convention imaginable, this one still manages to feel fresh by combining elements from all sorts of genres within the genre. The primary setting for the show is classic horror with broad swaths of comedy and it reminds me a lot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in it’s approach. It’s got the “monster of the week”, a metric ton of homages for classic horror/sci-fi fans, recognizable archetypes that are allowed to revel in their roles to the point of parody, and a pretty bizarre sense of humor to tie it all together. This may not have gone over big with the masses, but it feels like it was made with me in mind.

Every good anime (or any work of fiction, really) thrives one one thing above all else: characters. “Princess Resurrection” is a show that is acutely aware of this fact. While the limited cast of the first few episodes leads to a slow start, Princess Hime of the Monster Kingdom soon begins building her femme dream team of supernatural servants and allies and ends up with the usual ragtag group of lovably caustic personalities interacting with each other. Hime herself is a mythological creature, but revealing which one is a spoiler although you will likely smack yourself in the head for not realizing it sooner. She has the ability to resurrect the dead to be her faithful servants. It is the fate of all potential royal heirs to do away with each of their siblings before one can ascend to the throne and although our heroine has no interest in becoming Queen, she still lives under constant covert attack from members of her family. Her haughty reptilian gaze and cold mannerisms hide a kind and merciful woman with a passion for medieval weaponry, chainsaws, and general carnage. Flandre is her robotic pint-sized guardian who speaks only using the word “huga” and looks more then a little funny in her little maid outfit with her mouth wide open in a perpetually surprised expression. Hiro is granted the Flame of Life and becomes the first new subject drafted into Hime’s service. He requires her Flame regularly to maintain his immortality and is immune to death so long as he receives it. Maybe he would have been better off dead when the alternative is eternal abuse at the hands of a harem of ill-tempered female supernatural creatures.

Along the way two more primary characters show up to make the show really cook. First, Liza, the half-werewolf who can only semi-transform (usually her arms), but makes up for it with pure fighting spirit. She’s the typical tomboyish loudmouth character. For contrast, the vampire high school idol Reiri comes in initially to drink Hime’s blood. But being defeated, she withdraws but remains a part of their lives for the show’s duration. Her capricious and demure mannerisms coupled with her scorching wit make her the most entertaining character by far. It doesn’t hurt that she seems to have her own agenda as well. Whether she seeks friendship, another shot at Hime’s blood, romance with Hiro (or Hime), just wants to be entertained by the struggles and antics, or all of the above is not really made concrete for most for the show and I like it like that. Plus, any vampire that actually lives in an abandoned church is just damn cool. It’s also worth noting that Liza and Reiri HATE each other with the vamp typically getting the better of their exchanges. There are many more characters, but this is the primary cast.

Okay. Characters: check. What else is there to love? I haven’t even gotten started. Mermen, mummies, shapeshifters, an invisible man, spider-bats, triffids, headless horseman, the entire vampire race, a slasher film reject, a ghost ship, a vain witch with an unhinged laugh and goblin servants, an inept tanuki vampire hunter, a catgirl assassin, and some original surprises are just a few of the foes to be taken on before the anime’s premature conclusion. Hiro will be pierced, slashed, hit by vehicles, drowned, and vamped among many other demises along the way. He’s like an anime Kenny from South Park. Oh yes, and the satire. While “Princess Resurrection” utilizes several standard anime devices, it occasionally takes the time to mock itself and it’s own fans. One character happens upon the lead character combo and politely inquires what kind of cosplay they are doing. That is some funny stuff. Taking the premise even further, they stage an episode where a group of Hiro’s classmates invade the mansion (word to the wise; stay away from the creepy mansion at the top of the hill with a constant vortex of clouds over it) and each fall head-over-heels for their favorite anime-girl fantasy. One goes ga-ga for Hiro’s ridiculously chesty and naive sister, who works as Hime’s live-in maid and constantly makes groping gestures and repeats “squishy squishy”. Another admires the Amazonian warrior type and falls for Liza. The third is a shameless masochist who wishes to be dominated and treated poorly by the princess herself, who stomps on his face and then demands Flandre bring her a new unsoiled pair of shoes. It’s his dream come true. Thankfully, Reiri wasn’t around so I didn’t have to suffer an animated version of me making girlish “squee!” noises everytime a vampire was onscreen. They also missed a chance for more laughs by neglecting to point out that Hime’s little sister, Sherwood, is the classic loli archetype, which is disturbingly popular among otaku. But then again this particular anime’s only real weakness is that it often seems to pull punches on anything potentially offensive, which is both too bad and very odd considering the brazenly salacious closing credits. Speaking of which: the opening and closing credits are both very entertaining and amusing in and of themselves.

Now, this show was well on it’s way to five star status before the climax. But when Hime’s elder brother unleashed the ultimate biological weapon known to horror fans upon her town (and if you don’t know what that is, shame on you!), the show closed the deal. But on top of that, there are two bonus standalone episodes that I wish they had put sequentially before the climax because after building up and concluding the story arc that impressively, ending with a few throwaway eps -although very entertaining ones- kind of dampened the ending a bit. Still, this is a show I’ve enjoyed more then almost any anime in recent memory and that is a lot of anime. This definitely turned out to be a big sleeper hit for me. Sadly, getting a second season of a show like this one is even less dependable in Japan then it is in America so it appears “Princess Resurrection” is doomed to be incomplete as an anime. But then again, with animated series, there is always hope of it being picked up again down the line. And there’s always the manga if you aren’t retarded like me and get a headache reading right-to-left. Check this series out if you’re a horror fanatic and pray with me for another season.

Do not turn this movie down. Melanie Grifith is at her best as a hooker who gets thrown into a diffrent life, and is very charming in her roll. Harris lights up the screen yet again, and shows he knows which movies to be in. Milk Money is a great movie, that believe it or not, is good for the whole family. You won’t regret seeing this movie!

Okay, so the simularities are there…man falls in love with hooker…okay so that may be it but you have to admitt that when you watch this movie the first thought that pops in your head is ‘pretty woman’ without Roberts star power. If that’s the point when you turn this off it’s a shame for there is a little more to this film than ‘man meets hooker man loves hooker’. First off, the man doesn’t know she’s a hooker till half way through. The man is Ed Harris and the hooker V is played by Melanie Griffith. The story follows Frank, Harris’s son, as he and his friends save up their money to pay a hooker to show them her breasts. That hooker is V. In a chain of events V ends up staying in Franks tree-house while his father fixes her car. Frank, who has never known what it’s like to have a mother beings that his mother died giving birth to him, is excited to have V around and is convinced she would be the perfect step-mother (although I find it strange that he wants his step-mother to be the woman he just saw naked). The funny parts of this film consist of when they talk about V’s line of work since V believes Ed Harris knows she’s a hooker and he believes she’s a Math Tutor. The film is sweet and nice Hollywood fluff, nothing too meaty and nothing you’ll be jow dropped and amazed over but it’s cute and light and a decent film to boot so it won’t bore you and may just be what you feel like watching one rainy afternoon.

Just before legendary director William Wyler died, equally legendary director Billy Wilder was interviewed about his feelings about Wyler’s films, from “Best Years of Our Lives” to “Roman Holiday” to “Ben Hur” to “Funny Girl.”

Wilder, a tough cookie who hates schmaltz and sentiment, the director of such classics as “Some Like it Hot,” “The Apartment,” “The Seven Year Itch” and “Sunset Boulevard,” suddenly got emotional, expressing great affection for “The Best Years of Our Lives,” noting that it was one of the best films he had ever seen.

He reacted the way I reacted. He said that it was the only film that he could remember (of course, this was well before “Saving Private Ryan” was released in 1998), where he and the entire audience were drenched in tears within the first 10 minutes. It was an unforgettable experience for him, and he recognized immediately that “The Best Years of Our Lives” was obviously a deeply personal work for Wyler, where every scene, every frame, every note of music and word of dialogue, rang true with authenticity and emotion. This was Wyler’s territory. He knew the material. And many of the scenes that were shot mirrored his own experiences when he returned home from war.

This is why, after so many viewings, I still can’t get over the fact that no matter how many times I say to myself, “I’m not going to be moved by this or that scene,” I fail miserably. I just can’t help it. To say that this is a great film is an understatement of the highest order. And yet I can only count on one hand the number of friends I know who have seen this film from start to finish. I think the running length has something to do with it. You never see it on commercial television at all and unless you’re lucky enough to have cable, you’ll miss it entirely. And it’s not a film that people are banging down the doors to rent.

The wonderful thing about “The Best Years of Our Lives” is that it still holds up beautifully, unlike a lot of films that seem awkward or stilted. Fredric March, as the patriarch of the family (in an Oscar winning role), is stupendous. His acting and delivery of lines seems effortless and spontaneous, not the product of a script recited from memory. And to have Myrna Loy as his partner and the wonderful Teresa Wright playing his daughter (the latter an Oscar winner a few years earlier in “Mrs. Miniver”), how can you lose?

Like all great films, time has no meaning. The story sweeps you along like a great wave — a ride — that you never want to end. The famous “long hallway homecoming shot” that appears in the first 10 minutes of the film — I don’t care that it’s the scene that most people remember and is usually the ONLY scene that turns up in any highlight reel of greatest films ever made — it gets me every time.

And the ending, the last line from the movie, the one uttered by Dana Andrews — despite the sentimental setting — is so fabulously understated and cynical and yet filled with such hope, that you can’t help but be — what I describe as being — “happily devastated.” It’s a wonderful ending that purposely leaves you guessing about what will become of the characters played by Teresa Wright and Dana Andrews, but you can’t help but feel that their future looks bright in spite of their apparent state of destitution.

I just wish more people would see this film. There’s a treasure chest of great movies from the past that people overlook every day. This is one of them. I pity people who still buy or rent movies based on slick packaging alone.

I would rather pay $10 to see this film on the big screen or less than $20 to own this film so I can see it on a little screen — than pay about $4 to rent junk that has a good looking box — and a few great critical reviews from people you’ve never heard of.

Some films are good enough to rent, but only a few films are good enough to buy. “The Best Years of Our Lives” is a film to BUY.

“The Best Years of Our Lives” is a compelling dramatic masterpiece, and certainly one of the best films ever made. It’s not as well known today as other pieces from the period, such as “Casablanca” or “Citizen Kane”, but it is nevertheless a classic that deserves ranking with those same films.

This film paints a picture of the struggles of World War II servicemen that they faced AFTER the war was over. It was a more personal struggle of men returning home after being away for many years, and after experiencing horrors that their loved ones could never fully understand. They return home as changed people, and come home to changed lives.

The story of such a homecoming experienced by thousands of men after World War II is told from the perspective of three fictional characters: Captain Fred Derry, a bombadier in the Army Air Corps (Dana Andrews), Sergeant Al Stevenson, an Army infantryman (Frederich March), and Seamen Homer Parrish(Harold Russell). They happen to meet on the plane to their hometown, having never met before, and immediately form a bond built upon mutual understanding of the experiences of war and the anxieties of returning home again.

Captain Derry came from a poor background before the war, and married a blond bombshell (Virgnia Mayo) while in the Air Corps. He hopes to return home to a better life, a nice home with his wife, and a better job. This was not to be, as Derry struggles to try and deal with bad job prospects (no one in the civilian world needs a bombadier) and a cheating wife. In a poignant moment in the film, Derry (at his lowest) tells his Father to throw away the citations for his medals, because “they don’t mean anything”. His Father reads the one for the Distinguished Flying Cross, signed by General Jimmy Doolittle, and a look of pride comes over the old man’s face for his son’s heroism that makes you want to cry and cheer all at the same time. It also makes the viewer see how criminal it was for such a man to be made to feel worthless.

Sergeant Stevenson comes home to better circumstances, being a banker in the civilian world with a wife, two grown children, and a nice apartment. But he too must confront troubles, as Stevenson must get to know a family that progressed without him, and balance his job with his desire to aid servicemen seeking G.I. Bill loans. He battles with his bank’s bosses over the loan issue, and also struggles with alcoholism.

Seamen Parrish’s problems are the most obvious. He lost his hands during the war, and now must come home to his family and fiancee with hooks for hands. The actor who potrayed Parrish, Harold Russell, was a real disable veteran, and lends credibility to the role that no one else could have due to real life experience.

This may seem like a depressing film, but it is actually uplifting in its entirety because it does show that hope doesn’t die, and that you really can come home again after all. It is also a film of historical importance due to the insights it provides into post-World War II America, and the struggles of veterans in the post-war years. Captain Derry, Sergeant Stevenson, and Seamen Parrish, and their individual struggles to reclaim their lives can provide the student of history an important perspective on the many real life veterans who returned home, and the country of the time they returned home to.

The film has certainly earned accolades over the years. It won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1946. It was named by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 Best Movies ever made, and was also named as one of the most important films of all time by the National Archives for the National Film Registry.

“The Best Years of Our Lives” is not to be missed for both its dramatic poignancy and its insight into an important period of American History. And its a beautiful sight to behold in DVD quality.

This is visually one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The director, Karyn Kusama, whom I never heard of before, did a gargantuan job of visual composition. The photography is also stunning. Too awful the account and the spot are kind of broken-down. Charlize Theron does a very credible job as an action hero, but lets face it, this movie is all about looking large in tights and not about gigantic acting. She definetely got the “looking immense” aspect honest. Of the HD DVD’s I’ve watched so far, only King Kong matches it for color depth and detail. The Berlin and Potsdam locations shine thru. Those lucky enough to have visited this unbelievable city know how many more achitectural marvels await to be exploited in film. If you savor examine candy and can like the beauty of architecture, then this film is for you.

The year is 2415; it has been seven generations since the industrial plague whipped out 99% of the people. The few remaining survivors are all huddled into one city with walls protecting them from what ever is outside. It is an ideal city of Bregna ran by Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas) and a council. And as with any such city there will always be rebels that thinks something is spoiled with lack of freedom and mysterious disappearances. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) belongs to such an organization. Her mission as the most ept agent is to dispatch the so called benevolent ruler. Can she do this or will circumstances and chance encounters change the space?

The film does not boast of any thing really incredible except maybe an exceptionally rich architectural wait on fall. Shot mostly in Berlin we gawk many common places that for some reason they though would not be that familiar to the audience. Evidently they must not know how favorite Berlin is, especially key locations. The fresh region on their wish list was Brasilia because of its 1050’s futuristic look; however that proved to be economically unfeasible. Witness if you explore Sans Souci, Potsdam built in 1745 by Frederick the Astronomical, one of the world best know orangeries.

Although this movie had nothing improbable it is a perfect example of the genre and will own your attention as you anticipate where they are going with the account. Only someone that anticipates that it will stick to the engrossing series may be disappointed.

The DVD rendering adds some background commentaries that construct rewatching the film more exquisite.

Muppets From Set (not to be confused with the unusual Muppet Show’s Pigs in Residence) is one terrific movie. The Muppets redefine themselves on the cutting edge of entertainment, attach together a film of nonstop action and hilarity, pull off a rather touching ending, yelp an well-known lesson about life to children as well as adults, and really bring their possess special magic to the viewing audience. Feature films permit the Muppet universe to expand in altogether recent ways. For one thing, you bag to watch full-body shots of Muppets doing unbelievable things (rather than having to resolve for the veteran above the waist only shots) . Fair when Gonzo is really down about being alone in the world, he receives a communication from outer state (via his alphabet-shaped breakfast cereal) . Soon, he is convinced that he is an alien and, what is more, he claims his alien family is on its blueprint to earth. A definite secret agency picks up signs of the aliens and comes after Gonzo, thinking he can direct them what the aliens want and where they will land. The leader of this secret group, played by Jeffrey Tambor, is a slight bit out of his mind, and Gonzo falls just into his pending trap by showing up at the local news studio to direct that the aliens are coming. The other Muppets don’t really bear Gonzo’s claims, but they are alive to to succor rescue him when he falls into the spoiled clutches of the Men in Gloomy. The conclusion of the movie is a valid hoot indeed, delivering a end encounter of the truly recent kind.

All of the Muppet characters are great; Kermit and Miss Piggy don’t accumulate as considerable cover time as usual, but that may well be a edifying thing. Gonzo and his roommate Rizzo the Rat (another extraordinary, relatively novel character) are more than righteous of carrying the movie by themselves – of course, they don’t have to do it alone because many of the Muppets play notable parts. Pepe the Prawn absolutely steals the demonstrate, if you ask me; he may be the funniest Muppet yet created. As usual, a number of notorious stars originate cameo appearances in the film, including Andie MacDowell, Ray Liotta, F. Murray Abraham, Kathy Griffin, Hollywood Hogan (as his NWO self), and an always annoying David Arquette. Kids as well as adults should esteem this movie. This is as silly and delicious a Muppet movie as you will come by. Don’t let the kids win all of the enjoyment out of Muppets From Residence, though; there are plenty of things incorporated into the set and script to compose adults smile and laugh, as well.

The Muppets, in their long span of existence, have gone from making movies about Muppets, new adaptations with Muppets. Now, the Muppets seem perfectly co-existent with the world, while Gonzo alone feels truly out of location.

The sage goes as such: Gonzo feels left out, even when his comrades are already the motley crew, so he searches for answers. Then, through numerous signals varying from his breakfast cereal to the cosmic fish he starts getting contact from station, but no one believes him. Thus, Gonzo, and inevitably all, are taken for many tumultuous turns in concept the origins of Gonzo, er, whatever.

Now this is not one of the finer moppets movies, but this one has a more unusual feel, and I occupy Director Tim Hill had that kind of reach. With no true singing on their parts, a surprise since that was a forte of theirs, the soundtrack is replaced by funk/disco, which is amusingly woven in.

In addition, many passe characters bewitch a succor seat, while some unusual ones, or lesser-known ones, prefer the charge. Overall, this film was definitely droll, and a must for Muppet lovers, but remember that this is a bit of a original direction, and go with the lunge.

Never before available on home video and unseen on television since 1973, the 1950 production of Annie Get Your Gun has achieved somewhat legendary status, most notably for who would inherit the role Ethel Merman had made famous on Broadway in 1946. MGM originally cast Judy Garland, but her ongoing drug and alcohol problems led to her being fired and replaced by Betty Hutton. Fortunately, the bright and brassy Hutton sparkles in this highly fictionalized story of Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter who wins fame in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and wins the heart of fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler (Howard Keel). Dashing baritone Keel was beginning his career as one of MGM’s favorite leading men in the 1950s (including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Kiss Me, Kate). Together they make gold of the many Irving Berlin hits–”Doin’ What Comes Naturally,” “Anything You Can Do,” “They Say It’s Wonderful,” “I Got the Sun in the Morning,” and the classic anthem “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”

Annie Get Your Gun is unqustionably a product of the 1950s. Keel’s relentless chauvinism and Hutton’s constant fawning over him grow tiresome (though she does stand up to him in a battle of the sexes), and the Indians wear full headdresses and face paint, say “Ugh,” and destroy modern conveniences. (In the name of political correctness, the 1999 Broadway revival starring Bernadette Peters removed “I’m an Indian Too” and received its own share of criticism from purists.)
